Free Online OCR Tool

Extract selectable, editable text from images and PDF pages directly in your browser. 100% private, client-side recognition.

Before You Start: How OCR Works & Realistic Limitations

What It Does

Optical Character Recognition analyzes pixel patterns in images or scanned documents and reconstructs them into editable Unicode text characters.

6-Step Process

  • 1. Upload Image or PDF
  • 2. Render page to canvas
  • 3. Apply image filters
  • 4. Pick document language
  • 5. Process with Tesseract
  • 6. Edit, copy, or download

Realistic Limitations

  • Blurry or low-DPI scans have lower accuracy.
  • Cursive handwriting is not recommended.
  • Multi-column tables are extracted sequentially.
  • Rotated text must be upright.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use Contrast or Threshold filters for gray/shadowed paper.
  • Select the correct document language.
  • Check extracted text before copying.
Client-Side Security Notice: All OCR processing runs 100% in your browser memory via WebAssembly. Your images, invoices, and sensitive documents are never uploaded to any remote server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our browser-based OCR tool.

Our tool runs a compiled WebAssembly port of the open-source Tesseract OCR engine directly inside your browser. Your images and documents are processed entirely in your computer's local memory (RAM) with zero network transmissions, ensuring absolute data confidentiality.
Optical Character Recognition requires significant CPU and memory resources. Rendering a multi-page PDF all at once can freeze or crash client-side browser tabs. Processing one page at a time guarantees blazing fast performance, prevents browser out-of-memory errors, and gives you total precision over each page's filters and results.
You can extract text from JPG, JPEG, PNG, and modern WebP raster images, as well as digital or scanned PDF documents. We recommend using images with at least 150–300 DPI for high recognition accuracy.
OCR engines rely on clear contrast between glyph edges and backgrounds. If you have a scanned receipt with uneven shadows, faint ink, or paper grain, the Contrast (+40%) or Threshold (B&W) filters separate characters cleanly from background noise, boosting character recognition rates.
Standard Tesseract models are trained on printed typography and glyph shapes. While neat, block-printed handwriting can sometimes be detected, cursive handwriting, signatures, and calligraphy have lower recognition accuracy and may require manual editing.
The tool includes tested language models for English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Turkish, Dutch, and Polish. The model is downloaded on-demand when you select it.
ExploraTools OCR is 100% free with no registration, no subscription, and no hidden fees. Because processing occurs on your client machine, you can process standard document files up to 50MB with ease.
